Try This First

Here are a few simple steps to try before calling us in to fix your air conditioner.

Check and replace or clean your filter. If your air conditioner is turning on but no cold air is coming out this is a prime culprit. For central AC, change your furnace filter. For ductless units, clean the filter on the wall-mounted unit inside your home.

Check your electric panel and make sure the breaker for your air conditioner hasn’t tripped.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance keeps your AC system running efficiently, detects potentially hazardous refrigerant leaks, and extends its useful life. A Caboodl technician will test gas pressures, check condensate coil and evaporator system, clean the condenser, and run the system through the manufacturer’s safety check.

Basic regular maintenance you should be on top of for your AC includes changing your furnace filter regularly or cleaning the filter on the wall unit for a ductless split unit.

Repair vs Replace

You can expect your air conditioner to last around 15 years. The decision to repair or replace depends on a number of factors, with cost obviously front and center.

When it's time to replace:

Your system is more than 15 years old. Newer, more efficient systems and discontinued refrigerants mean you’re better off replacing.

Loss of pressure in a unit with R-22 gas. While there are options for the safe replacement of R-22 gas into an older system that may make repairs possible, a newer system will offer greater reliability, safety, and efficiency.

Compressor burnout. The compressor is the heart of your air conditioner, responsible for circulating refrigerant through the entire system. It is often the most expensive repair for malfunctioning units and it is often better to simply replace the unit.

Considerations for a New Air Conditioner

SEER

SEER

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. Essentially, how efficiently does your air conditioner cool your home. A higher SEER means a more efficient unit.

Tonnage

Tonnage

The total cooling capacity of your air conditioner. The tonnage required to cool your home depends on many factors. Two homes with similar square footage may require different sized air conditioners because insulation, number of floors, etc.

R410 vs R22

R410 vs R22

The refrigerant used in your system. R22 has been discontinued for environmental reasons so a new unit will be R410. But if your existing unit is R22 there will be more work involved in cleaning or replacing your line sets
